Collection contains typed or photostatic copies of correspondence between agents for the two firms. Topics include the tobacco markets in England and the continent; demand, prices, and political influence on economic conditions. There is an essay entitled "Old Letters from Dumfries, Va." by Bessie W. Gahn, describing the economic and historical setting in which the company operated. Also included is a letter, 1930, and a merchants' daybook, 1789-1890. Accounts include a variety of merchandise for which prices are given. Shipments of tobacco are recorded from warehouses on the Potomac River or its tributaries at Dumfries, Aquia, Boydshole, Colchester, Machodack, and Quantico. There are entries for prominent local residents including Richard Brent, and Jesse Ewell. Entries include transactions involving the use of "certificates" and "interest warrants" which were probably used as currency substitutes.
